Description: Fantastic all original carved oak grandfather clock made by Walter H Durfee, Providence, RI. The hood has a broken arch top with double handled urn finials, egg and dart moldings, applied carvings, three carved columns on each side with extensive carvings on top and bottom and pierce carved sides where the sound of the tubes can vibrate out. The case has raised panel sides, floral applied carvings, fluted rectangular columns and a lovely shaped beveled glass door surrounded by a beaded molding. The base has floral and wreath carvings and claw feet on the front and back. There is a vertical sliver of wood missing on the backboard. This clock has the original Durfee nine tube three weight movement with fancy silver and etched brass dial with revolving moon dial on top. It plays eight bells or Westminster chimes every fifteen minutes and strikes the hour. The clock was originally retailed by J. E. Caldwell & Co, Philadelphia. They were the premier jewelers in that city around 1900. Durfee made the finest clocks of the era and they are highly prized today. With elegant design and extraordinary detail to the carvings, this is one of the best clocks we have ever offered for sale! Best of the best!
