Description: Elegant mahogany pattern number 42 grandfather clock made by Walter Durfee, Providence, R.I. The dial has a fancy brass tag with his name on it. It is also signed in the small circle underneath the moon dial. This clock is shown on pages 153 and 155 of "Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators" by Tran Duy Ly. The only variation is that this clock has a bracket base rather than the claw feet pictured in the book. It has a two brass weight movement with gong, second hand, and calendar window. The silver dial is surrounded by a fancy brass filigree and has a nicely painted revolving moon/ship dial at the top. Three original brass finials sit on the top of the hood. The slender case features full twist columns on the sides of the hood, middle, and base with fancy brass capitals at each end. There is a lovely carved recessed panel in the base. The moldings are all intricately carved as is typical of the fine craftsmanship of the Durfee shop. Durfee was the premier clock maker of the period and this clock is a fine example of his work!
