Description: Super Rococo rosewood Victorian vanity or dressing table made
by Alexander Roux, NYC. The top has a wonderful open carved crest featuring
flowers, fruit and grapes. The original mirror is held in place by two
fancy cast brass threaded knobs that pass through a heavily carved shaped
support. The supports are screwed into the marble from underneath. The
inset marble has a raised border and fancy cut edge. It was in two pieces
and has been professionally repaired. There is a carving on four places on
the rim of the top that surrounds the marble. The center drawer has a satin
wood interior. The inside of the drawer is missing several dividers (see
photo). The finish on the right side of the skirt is a bit "crusty" having
a different light exposure than the left side. We could have these restored
if the buyer wishes it to be done. The base has open carved stretchers with
a beautiful carved finial in the middle. There are four graceful cabriole
legs with carvings. The four castors have been replaced but the original
beaded brass rings are intact. We are offering a matching rosewood table signed by Roux for sale to the buyer of this dressing table. It can be seen at this link: Roux Table. When comparing the various elements on the vanity
and table we can declare with certainty that Roux was the maker of this
piece. Important NYC made case pieces from this period are difficult to
find. This is one of the best vanities we have ever seen offered for
sale!
