Description: Rare Aesthetic Victorian faux bamboo birdseye maple lockside
chest attributed to R.J. Horner, NYC. There is a beveled mirror on top with
an ornate spindled crest and side returns. A quarter round bamboo turned
molding frames the mirror and side panels. There are four larger drawers in
front with a narrower top drawer. Each of these drawers has an original
bamboo styled bar pull and half round moldings - typical of the Horner case
pieces. The right side swings open to allow the owner to open the drawers.
We have an old key for looks but it doesn't work the lock - the drawers
never locked. A previous owner had the back replaced (see photo) but this
doesn't show when the piece is up against a wall. An example of a vanity
in this style is shown on page 140 of "Masterpieces of American Furniture
from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute." R.J. Horner is generally
recognized as the leading manufacturer of such pieces. A lovely chest with
great proportions and style!
