Description: Outstanding Large Victorian Walnut Armchair with an open pierced carved and scrolled crest that encases a silver plaque. The plaque says "Presented to Mr. Benjamin F. Campbell by the Employees of Campbell Whittier & Co, December 1860." Campbell & Whittier Co. of Cambridge MA built the first locomotive for Mt. Washington Cog Railway in 1866. The chair is a beautiful form with indented curled arms, seriated small balls underneath the arms that are surrounded by deep ornate carvings, and a very graceful foot with scrolling. Notice the depth of the carving and ornate serpentine construction of the accentuated apron. This chair makes an impressive profile and also has some very interesting and rare historical provenance.
