Description: Beautiful Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian armchairs
attributed to John Jeliff, Newark, NJ. They have wonderful large deeply
open carved top crests. The frames are decorated with carved buttons,
incised carvings, and raised burled panels. Notice the vibrant symmetrical
grain of the book matched burl! The heads on the arms are the trademark of
the Jeliff firm. In "American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and
Richard Dubrow, a sofa on page 181 and table on page 183, both attributed to
Jeliff, have the identical carved head motif. The round turned legs end
with the original castors. The fabric was put on by a previous owner. It
is still in fairly good usable condition. A stunning pair of chairs by one
of the most renowned makers of the period!
