Description: Three piece Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian parlor suite
attributed to John Jeliff, Newark, NJ. Each piece has a open carved top
crest with an intricately carved head within a circle molding. The frames
are decorated with carved buttons, incised carvings and shaped burled
panels. The heads on the arms are the trademark of the Jeliff firm. In
"American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow, a
sofa on page 181 and table on page 183, both attributed to Jeliff, have the
identical carved head motif. The frames are supported on round turned legs
in front with all original brass castors. The sofa has a wonderful design
with a suspended upholstered oval panel in the middle surrounded by a fancy
walnut frame. The fabric was put on a number of years ago by a previous
owner. It is still usable but you might wish to get it reupholstered. The
Jeliff heads on the arms are typical but not all Jeliff pieces have the
carved head also in the crest. The frame of this suite is in remarkably
fine original condition.
